System, Transmigration and Isekai GL Novels in English: 6 Picks With Adult Leads

Otome-game escapes, a creepypasta otherworld, a laundromat portal and a past life: licensed GL where the heroine wakes up somewhere else.

The best transmigration and isekai GL reads with official English editions are Ameko Kaeruda's A Lily Blooms in Another World, Iori Miyazawa's Otherside Picnic, KJ's portal romance Outcast and, for reincarnation, Jeongussi's webtoon Unnie, I Like You!

Chinese web fiction has a word for each version of this. Chuanyue (穿越) is crossing over: you die, or fall asleep, and wake in another body, another era or another world. Chuanshu (穿书) narrows it to the inside of a novel, usually one you've already read. Kuaichuan (快穿), quick transmigration, strings several worlds together like episodes, and the xitong (系统), the System, is the voice in your head handing out missions and point totals. Japan's isekai (異世界, "other world") and Chinese chongsheng (重生), rebirth, cover the rest. In baihe (百合), the Chinese term for GL, all of these do the same job. The heroine shows up knowing the script, and the script was never written for two women, so falling in love also means fighting the plot. It works when knowing the ending costs her something, and when the woman she falls for turns out to be more than the role the original story gave her.

Now, what's missing. Most of the famous Chinese System and quick-transmigration GL titles have no official English edition, and we don't send readers to unofficial translations. A lot of licensed Japanese yuri isekai is set at school with teenage leads. Even the most promising recent manga, The Fed-Up Office Lady Wants to Serve the Villainess, falls through: its heroine is 25, but Okazu's reviewer puts the villainess at 15 or 16. So this is a short list: two Japanese light novels, one webtoon, three English-language novels and two free serials of our own. One of the serials is the only entry with a literal System.

Pulled into a game or a book

A Lily Blooms in Another World — Ameko Kaeruda (2018)

The tidiest otome-isekai yuri we found in English, and it's only one volume. A Japanese office worker who worked herself to death wakes up as Miyako Florence, heroine of her favourite otome game, engaged to the game's hero. She wants the villainess, Fuuka Hamilton, instead. So she makes sure the engagement gets called off, confesses, and asks Fuuka to run away with her. Fuuka has one condition: Miyako has fourteen days to get her to say "I'm happy." The first half is basically a honeymoon at a country cottage. The second half brings an outbreak of disease and Fuuka going home to face a harsh punishment. GL Bunko published it in Japan in 2018, and J-Novel Club put it out in English in 2020. Okazu's reviewer loved that the leads were competent adult women and complained that the published art makes them look like children. Heat is low: a kiss, plus one flustered moment over nudity that the book never describes. If you want more stories about the villainess getting the girl, we have a separate list of villainess yuri novels.

System, Stop Making Me Fall for the Villainess — Dana Whitlock

System, Stop Making Me Fall for the Villainess is a NovelMyth original serial, free to read, three chapters so far, and it's built the way Chinese System stories are. Ash Quinn, 25, slips on a wet laundromat floor and receives a placement notice from a Transmigration Services Bureau. Its opening rule: "Screaming is not a recognized form of appeal." She's been dropped into a 412-chapter corporate thriller she once gave two stars. Her role is the villainess's nameless assistant. The villainess is Director Celeste Arden, 30. The mission has one condition that matters: Villainess Affection must stay at zero for 90 days. It's at 5 by the end of her first day, and at 17 by chapter two. At that point the System's best idea is that Ash insult the Director's mother, and it quietly withdraws the suggestion. It's dry, office-sized comedy, and it turns colder in chapter three, when a Correction Protocol starts a 72-hour clock.

I Became the Villainess Engaged to the Heroine — Yoon Seorin

I Became the Villainess Engaged to the Heroine is a NovelMyth original serial, free to read, three chapters so far. It's pure chuanshu, with no System, just a heroine and a list of risks she keeps in a diary. Tessa, 29, processes invoices for a freight company. She reaches for her microwave soup and comes to with a cup of scalding tea held over the head of Saint Elodie, 25, in chapter three of a romance-fantasy she's read four times. Tessa is now Lady Seraphine Vauclair, 24, engaged to the Saint by royal decree, and the book ends with Seraphine beheaded on the palace steps. The twist is what makes it a rebirth story too: the Saint keeps saying "this time," and chapter three ends with a note in the Saint's handwriting suggesting she remembers how it went before. So far it's a slow burn that has reached fingers along a jaw in a stone doorway.

Through a door: portal fantasy

Otherside Picnic — Iori Miyazawa (2017)

This is isekai as horror. Sorawo Kamikoshi, a university student, goes through a door in an abandoned building and finds the Otherside. It's a world where internet creepypasta and urban legends are real and will kill you. Toriko Nishina, a woman who's good with guns, saves her life. Toriko is searching for Satsuki Uruma, a missing researcher who used to tutor her, and the two keep going back to sell what they bring out. Hayakawa published it in Japan in 2017. J-Novel Club has been translating it since 2019, and it got an anime in 2021. You can come and go from the Otherside, so it's closer to a dungeon than a new life. Be patient with the romance. Toriko's confession only comes in the omnibus collecting volumes 7 and 8, and Sorawo gets a week to answer.

Outcast — KJ (2023)

The most traditional isekai on the list, and probably the most fun. Rhiannon Clarke's identity has been stolen and thugs are chasing her around Melbourne for a debt she doesn't owe. She ducks into a laundromat (apparently the most dangerous place in sapphic fiction) and falls through a portal at the back into the realm of Breula. They rename her Sev, she has to win a sword fight to buy her freedom, she finds she can bend metal, and she falls for Ori, the warrior princess who leads the Guard. The question running through the book is whether she still wants to go home. The Lesbian Review called it unique and delightful. Some Goodreads readers found the magic too convenient and the chemistry thin, and one gave up at 42%. Medium heat, with sex scenes on the page.

Magic & Mead — Rachel Parisi (2024)

This is the nearest thing to sapphic LitRPG we could verify, though it's sold as a cozy mystery, not a progression book. Clara O'Connell runs a gaming store. She's dropped into Silvershade, a world that looks a lot like the tabletop fantasy settings she's played for years, and within minutes she trips over a corpse and becomes the main suspect. Dwarves, dragonkind and orcs fill the cast. The love interest is Lore, a lady elf. Parisi says Legends & Lattes inspired it, and you can tell: it's cozy, short (around 180 pages) and fade-to-black. Read it for the mystery and the company.

Other lives: reincarnation and parallel selves

Unnie, I Like You! — Jeongussi (2021)

A webtoon rather than a novel, but it's the clearest reincarnation romance with adult leads in official English. Park Chanmi, a student from a wealthy family, remembers a past life in which she loved a woman named Hanbyeol, who died young. In this life Hanbyeol is a university professor and remembers nothing. Chanmi sets out to keep the old tragedy from happening again. It started on WEBTOON's Canvas section in 2021 and moved to WEBTOON Originals in June 2024. Tokyopop is releasing it in print, with volume 1 listed for October 2026. The student-and-professor setup won't suit every reader, so know that going in.

The Space Between Worlds — Micaiah Johnson (2020)

No reincarnation, but it's the deepest take on the idea here: other worlds full of other versions of you. Cara grew up poor in Ashtown. She works as a traverser for the walled city of Wiley, and travel only works to Earths where your double is already dead. Most of Cara's doubles are, which is why she's useful. She's also had a crush on her watcher, Dell, for years, and Dell might feel the same. Del Rey published it in 2020 and it won the Compton Crook Award. One honest caveat: the Lesbrary reviewer called the romance one of the book's weaker points and the sci-fi plot its real strength. Expect frank depictions of addiction, sex work and abuse.

FAQ

Are any Chinese quick-transmigration or System GL novels officially in English?

None that we could confirm as of October 2026. The nearest is Matrilocal Marriage: Ruzhui by Qing Jun Mo Xiao (请君莫笑), a time-travel baihe novel. Seven Seas has scheduled volume 1 for August 2027.

Which of these are spicy?

Outcast has on-page sex scenes at a medium heat level. Magic & Mead fades to black, A Lily Blooms in Another World stops at a kiss, and Otherside Picnic is a very slow burn. The Space Between Worlds is the darkest of the lot, because of its abuse and addiction storylines. Our two serials haven't gone past a near-kiss yet.

Where should I start?

If you came from Chinese transmigration web novels and miss the System screens, start with our serial. If you want a finished story in one evening, read A Lily Blooms in Another World. If you'd rather be scared than soothed, Otherside Picnic is the one.
